On 18th of April in 1880 when the small town of Barnettsville, Missouri, was completely destroyed by a cyclone which left death and destruction in its path. Eleven people were killed and many inured. The storm occurred about 4:00 p.m. on a Sunday afternoon and covered a distance of 1 mile wide and several miles in length. Barnettsville, which was located 1 mile north of the present town of Barnett, was named for Barnett Lusk's son, Barnett, Jr. who passed away in early manhood. Mr. Lusk operated the first store and named the town in honor of his son. At the time of the cyclone, buildings in the town consisted of two stores and one blacksmith shop, and several residences.
In 1901 the Rock Island railroad was built 1 mile south of Barnettsville and the town was moved to the present site. Several buildings were moved to the new town. The name was then changed to Barnett. Barnett, Missouri, is situated in the eastern part of Morgan County, not far from the Miller County line. It is a 4th Class Municipal City of some two hundred inhabitants.
